Tapes ‘n Tapes – Outside

February 3, 2011

Tapes ‘n Tapes have a new album out called Outside. It is the band’s 3rd full length album. After their successful debut, The Loon in ’06, they followed it up with Walk It Off in ’08. The Loon landed some favorable reviews & had the band finding some early success in their career. Walk It Off did not receive such great reviews & left some (me) scratching their heads.

I was excited to see what the band would put out next. Then, this month, out came the 3rd album Outside. Without hearing a single track, I used some of those Emusic credits I had & purchased it. I played it that day while working. I didn’t care for the first few tracks, I kept thinking…. it will get better. Then on track 5, I had my fill of Tapes ‘n Tapes for the day. I was bored. I started fresh the next day on track 6, hoping for a better 2nd half of the album. Making it through the end to track 12 was still a struggle. I was STILL BORED with album. I hadn’t been this disappointed since last April when I received my pre-ordered  copy of The Whigs 3rd album. (WORST PURCHASE OF THE YEAR FOR ME!)

I decided to give the album another try. A few days later, it still bored me to tears. Third times a charm right? Different mood, different time, I waited over a week before revisiting Outside. I was pleased with track 1, “Badaboom.” I didn’t dislike it as much this go around. Then I even sort of dug track 3. Maybe I was just not in a Tapes ‘n Tapes mood those 1st couple times?

After listening in entirety a 3rd time, I was not swayed to giving Outside a very positive review. The band seemed to try and get back to the sound of their 1st album The Loon. It just didn’t work for me this time around. Too bad, this may be the last time I’m willing to get burned on the purchase of a full album from them. I hope some of you others like this album more than I did.

I give Tapes ‘n Tapes – Outside, 5.9/10

“Badaboom”*
