5 great albums of 2011

June 4, 2011

Since I’m getting behind on my reviews, I’ll throw in a shorter version here with 5 albums I really like so far in 2011, but just haven’t gotten around to writing a review for yet. I’ll go in alphabetical order. Check at the bottom to listen to some of my favorite tracks.

Cut CopyZonoscope

If you only buy 1 dance album this year, I don’t think you can go wrong with Cut Copy‘s 3rd album Zonoscope.  One you’ll want to spin it again & again. I dare you to try and NOT dance while jammin’ to this album.

I give Cut CopyZonoscope, 8.6/10

DestroyerKaputt

This is the 9th album from front man, singer-songwriter, Daniel Bejar, of Destroyer. I hadn’t ever heard a Destroyer album before getting my hands on this one. I must say, I was glad that I did. It is still one of my favorite albums of the year so far. Beautiful songs often featuring saxophone jams, this is an album you just need to grab and listen to. You can skip his zany music vids, just stick to the album, you are bound to be impressed.

I give DestroyerKaputt, 8.8/10

Dirty BeachesBadlands

This is an album I almost didn’t check out. I had heard the 1st couple singles from Alex Zhang Hungtai, a.k.a. Dirty Beaches & I liked them alright, but wasn’t sure I’d enjoy an entire album of songs like those. Thankfully, my friend loaned me a copy. He said it was good & I trust his tastes, so I checked it out myself. I really enjoyed the album. His sound is extremely unique, almost like a low-fi & grungy modern-day Elvis. His songs definitely have a 50’s & atmospheric vibe.

This is worthy of a listen at the least. You’ll either like it, or you won’t, but you can at least say that you tried & heard something unique.

I give Dirty BeachesBadlands, 8.2/10

Kurt VileSmoke Ring For My Halo

I was really excited for the release of this album. I had heard a couple tracks & thought they were amazing. Then after getting the album & listening in full, I was loving every track. The more times I listened to Smoke Ring For My Halo, the more I liked it. It almost became a guilty pleasure of mine (a la Teeel‘s Amulet) I was listening to it so much. If you like singer-songwriter music, you should love this album. Definitely a fav of mine in 2011.

I give Kurt VileSmoke Ring For My Halo, 8.7/10

YuckYuck

This band for me came a bit out of nowhere.  I heard a song a couple weeks before the album dropped on NPR’s Music That Matters podcast & then bam, there is was, an album from a 90’s-influenced young rock band called Yuck. Some catchy tracks that you could hear a lot of their influences of the old, but still sounding new & great. (sort of like Smith Westerns) This is an album to check out, I’ll end this with a quote from The Guardian:

Yuck have a winning way with a melody, and their layering of guitars with noise and rich, ringing tones is rarely short of gorgeous.”

I give YuckYuck, 7.9/10

All 5 of these albums get my signature hipster approval.

Here is 1 of my favorite tracks from each album:

Cut Copy “Alisa”

Destroyer “Chinatown”

Dirty Beaches “Horses”

Kurt Vile “Runner Ups”

Yuck “Holing Out”

That whole album is really solid, I was actually going to put “Kaputt” on there, but couldn’t find it on soundcloud. Sometimes on an album like Destroyer’s with so many good good tracks, it just becomes a toss up as to which one I can find 1st. Thanks for checking out my blog.

Indeed, best 2011 album so far, IMO. Is there anything hipper than chasing cocaine through the backrooms of the world?

I think my top 5 albums of the year are all very solid, The new Bon Iver would also be up there with those in my best of 2011 so far. Have you heard Destroyer’s older work? Just curious, this latest album is all I’ve heard.

Hahaha, cool. I’m hoping to help change the connotation of the word hipster. Since you just called yourself one too, maybe it’ll keep catching on.
