Album of the Month: Cloud Nothings – Attack On Memory

January 27, 2012

I have been a big Cloud Nothings fan ever since I 1st heard their music. Lead singer, Dylan Baldi, was only 18 years old. That was early in 2010 & I had just bought copy #500 0f 500 of the 3rd eddition of their 1st album, Turning On. They were signed with Bridgetown Records at that time. (Turning On was later re-released on Carpark Records with an additional 5 songs.) Their sound then was full of catchy hooks & lo-fi pop/rock music.

Fast forward to today & their 3rd album, Attack On Memory, has just recently been released. Their sound has grown quite nicely over that time. There is really no more of that lo-fi sound at all. Dylan’s vocals are no longer distorted. The songs aren’t necessarily catchy or pop sounding either. If you missed their sophomore self-titled album, you may be asking yourself, “Who the hell is this band?”

The album title, Attack On Memory, is explained by Dylan as, “…an attack on the memory of what people thought the band was.” Well put sir. Attack On Memory is harder hitting & darker than anything they have done to this point.

The 1st song on the album is still my favorite & gets you into the vibe of the album, titled “No Future/No Past.”

From Cloud Nothings 1st album, Turning On, here is “Can’t Stay Awake.”
